Industry/customer impact main findings
WR Ethical recommends mortgages from across the UK market and considers both cost and ethical factors when advising customers.
The company states that it will recommend customers go directly to a lender where this represents the lowest-cost option. Its approach focuses on delivering fair value and taking time with each customer.
The assessment also highlights work to simplify its pricing structure, with fixed fees explained upfront. WR Ethical has a Putting Customers First commitment, data protection policies and complaints procedures in place.
Environmental main findings
WR Ethical plants one tree for every mortgage arranged and calculates and offsets its carbon footprint through Ecologi. Its mission includes an aim to provide environmentally conscious mortgages, and it publishes guidance on green and ethical mortgages.
The company uses office space provided by DeskLodge, a certified B Corporation that sources 100 per cent renewable electricity. It encourages employees working from home to use renewable electricity tariffs, although it does not formally monitor or record their home energy suppliers.
WR Ethical is also a member of 1% for the Planet.
Social main findings
WR Ethical states that it is committed to treating customers equally, regardless of income, rather than concentrating on wealthier clients.
It offers free initial mortgage consultations and Agreements in Principle, with no broker fee for like-for-like remortgages and rate switches. It also offers cashback for first-time buyers.
The assessment records a commitment to donating 5 per cent of profits to charity each year. WR Ethical is also Fair Tax accredited.
Internal (staff/policies/offices) main findings
WR Ethical’s employee guide covers business ethics and includes policies on diversity and equality, whistleblowing, and health and safety.
Advisers can choose between salaried employment and self-employed consultancy. Salaried advisers receive a base salary plus commission, while self-employed advisers are paid entirely through commission.
The company provides funding for staff training and operates an unlimited annual leave policy. A staff survey received an overall positive response.
Comment from WR Ethical
Paul Waterfall, Director and Mortgage Adviser at WR Ethical, said: “I’m delighted that WR Ethical has achieved Good Egg Certification. I’ve admired what the team at Good with Money has been doing since before we started WR Ethical, and to have our principles and practice pass their rigorous assessment is such a buzz.
“We try to do what’s right, but it can be hard to look outside your own niche and see if your approach stands up to proper scrutiny. This certification, along with our B Corp and Fair Tax certifications, confirms that it does.
Each assessment process has looked at our business differently, so the collection of certifications is testament, in my view, to doing good being built in rather than trying to tick some boxes. It gives us confidence to continually improve and try to inspire others to do the same.”
Selected panellist comments
“Some of the positives that stood out to me included the commitments to charitable donation and tree giving; the specialism in green mortgages; and the range of impressive accreditations, many of which are both very credible and difficult to obtain. These aspects suggest a business going “above and beyond”, especially considering the size and maturity of the business.”
“I really love their rounded approach to ethical/green mortgages and business operations. Including the BCorp status and even engagement with the GFI. They want to do this well.”
“There are also some encouraging aspects from a consumer point of view – the website has loads of useful content and clear information, guides etc.”
